Not only should extra virgin olive oil be a staple in your pantry, but also in your bathroom cabinet. That's right, I'm telling you to add it to your daily beauty routine. And here's why...
benefits of extra virgin olive oil on skin
why would I put something I cook with on my skin?
For centuries, extra virgin olive oil has been used topically to relieve every day skin ailments. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-aging properties because it is packed with antioxidants and vitamins. It hydrates the skin by building the skin’s moisture barrier to prevent loss of moisture.
why Extra Virgin instead of olive oil or other oils?
Extra virgin olive oil should always be used in personal care products instead of a refined oil - like regular olive oil. The high heat and solvents used to refine olive oil alters or removes the antioxidants naturally present in extra virgin olive oil. The resulting refined oil will moisturize the skin, but the benefits (anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial) of the multitude of antioxidants will be lost.
The high proportion of vitamins K and E, and a multitude of polyphenols protect against free radicals which damage the skin, making extra virgin olive oil effective in aiding common skin disorders such as:
- diaper rash
Sounds convincing. How do I use it?
Great question! It has numerous uses when it comes to personal care. It's my all-in-one skin care solution. From head to toe, I use olive oil for just about everything. Don't be afraid of getting "all oily" (we hear that a lot). It's super absorbant and a little goes a long way.
Some of my favorite uses include:
- makeup remover
- full body moisturizer
- cuticle cream
- bath oil
- hair treatment
- shaving lubricant
- under eye serum
- face wash
- oil pulling
